| In previuos post by Sonia_Pro, I have certain reservation about the best Homeopathic software. Though Radar 10 is best in a sence that is packed with the full bunch of utilities and a vast collection of the books. But for a homeopath the most difficult problem is quick repertorization. I have Used Radar 10, Hompath 8, Cara1.4,Mac Repertory pro7, and Latest Miccant ISIS Vision but the use of a computor or a book version of the repertory there is no difference in these softwares. I mean to say that You have to browse the repertory either way(book or computorized) and you can't use the the full resouces of the computor to save time(as said i.e Time is money). I had a chance recently using Mercurius 4.3 trial and after using this software I concluded that for quick repertorizatoion Mercurius software is the best utility.( I am giving Following two excerpts plz do read it) It is my opinion. I anticipate positive contradicting thoughts. This is excerpt from the article written by Peter Bezemek Basic search Since we use text-based repertories, we need to search for a text. Each rubric of the repertory can be divided to words which can be searched for. In Mercurius, all you need to do to find a symptom is typing the words or parts of the words you think should be present in the rubric, in any order. Full Partial matching To search for a pain in the temples that moves from left to the right temple, we could type the search query Query 1: temple left right pain The query executes as searching for rubrics containing the characters “*temple*” AND “*left*” AND “*right” AND “*pain*” (according to star convention1) Some of the results triggered by the query: Head, phenomena, pain, drawing, forehead, sides, right, left and to left temple, to Head, phenomena, pain, temples, left, right, to Head, phenomena, pain, bursting, temples, left, right, then Head, phenomena, pain, neuralgic, temples, left, right, to As it is clear from the results, it is important to be able to search not only for whole words, but also parts of the words, otherwise the keyword “temple” would not trigger the results that contain the word “temples”. This is a very important feature, useful for finding the words about which we are unsure in what form they are used in the rubric/symptom. It is especially useful in some non- English languages such as German or Slavonic languages which use a lot prepositions and different word forms, making it very difficult to find anything using plain whole-word matching. Full partial matching avoids this problem and allows the user to find the matching rubrics without the need to think about all the possible word forms. 1 A mask for representing the names of multiple entries with asterisks. Asterisk (*) means any characters i.e. “*head*” matches the words “forehead” or “headache”. One-sided partial matching or whole-word matching Sometimes, full partial matching may trigger undesired results, such as when searching for “head” finds rubrics with “forehead”. This can be avoided by using one-sided partial matching or whole-word martching. Such behaviour is set by using the capital letters at the beginning or the end of the keyword. Rules: 1. Left-sided partial matching - > If the keyword starts with a capital letter, the matching word starts with the keyword . (“Head” triggers “head” or “headache”, but not “forehead”) 2. Right-sided partial matching - > If the keyword ends with a capital letter, the matching word ends with the keyword. (“heaD” triggers “head”, “forehead”, but not “headache”) 3. Whole-word matching - > If the keyword starts and ends with a capital letter, the matching word must match the keyword exactly. (“HeaD” or “HeAD” or “HEAD”, all trigger “head” and nothing else) For English language, the most suitable search seems to be left-sided partial matching. Negative matching To specify a negative match, we can use the minus “-” sign to filter out certain keywords we do not wish to be included in the results. To look for rubrics related to hay fever occuring in spring or summer, but not in autumn or winter, we can specify the following query: Query 2: “hay fever -autumn -winter” Some of the results triggered by the query: Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, spring Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, summer Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, summer, diarrhea, in Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, august, in OR matching It is sometimes useful to be able to use OR function to specify. In Mercurius, OR matching is specified by plus “+” sign. To look for the previous example using the OR matching, we could write. Query 3: “hay fever spring + hay fever summer” Some of the results triggered by the query: Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, spring Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, summer Nose, phenomena, coryza, general, annual, hay fever, summer, diarrhea, in Synonymic matching The support of synonyms is vital for achieving the best results. English expressions have lots of synonyms and many of them are used in the repertory. By using synonymic matching the number of results can rise even 20 times! Mercurius implements the best-in-the-industry support of synonyms. All synonyms are contained in the file synonyms.cfg that can be edited by the user in any text editor. Without synonymic support, the search for “Rude” triggers 10 records in Repertorium Universale III: Generalities, modalities, rudeness of others agg. Head, phenomena, pain, talking, agg., rude Mind, phenomena, rudeness Mind, phenomena, rudeness, children, of naughty Mind, phenomena, rudeness, diarrhea, in Mind, phenomena, rudeness, employees to the chiefs, of Mind, phenomena, rudeness, fever, during Mind, phenomena, rudeness, women, in Mind, phenomena, sadness, despondency, depression, melancholy, rudeness of others, from Mind, phenomena, sensitive, oversensitive, general, rudeness, to On the other hand, the same search with synonymic matching triggers 238 symptoms! Some of the results triggered by the query: Mind, modalities, insults, offenses, ailments from Mind, phenomena, abrupt Mind, phenomena, abusive, insulting Mind, phenomena, quarrelsomeness, scolding Mind, phenomena, cursing, swearing, desires Mind, phenomena, reproaches, others Mind, phenomena, lewdness, obscene Mind, phenomena, mocking, general, friends, at his Multiple-words synonymic matching Mercurius is the only known homeopathic software in the world that implements multiple words synonymic matching. This feature is extremely useful for triggering synonyms based on a combination of keywords. To look for a headache with the perspiration of hands you would type: Query 4: “head pain perspir hand” With synonymic matching, this would reveal the symptom: Extremities, phenomena, perspiration, general, upper limbs, hands, migraine, in As it is clear from the result, “head pain” combination propagated to “migraine” and discovered a symptom you would normally hardly find. When the query is executed, the algorithm performs the following search: “head pain perspir hand + headache perspir hand + migrai perspir hand” The algorithm is able to map the one word or a multiple combination of words to one word or a multiple combination of words. Thus “headache” triggers also “head pain”. “strong will” triggers both “Mind Stubborn” and “headstrong”. By using these advantages, the following feats are also possible: To look for a headache that gets worse outside, you just type: Query 5: “headache outside worse” which triggers the right results, such as: Head, phenomena, pain, air, open, agg. Head, phenomena, pain, tearing, temples, air, open, agg. Head, phenomena, pain, vertex, air, open, agg. Internally, the algorithm executes a complicated query which covers the combination of all the defined synonyms. This is 2nd excerpt from the article written by Vladimír Polóny Limitations of the repertory structure Repertory structure, like every fixed system, has its limitations. Because the structure of the repertory is not perfect, there is a risk, that because of the fixed structure, the homeopath will not always find desired symptoms. If the symptom consists of more locations, it is uncertain, where the symptom will be located in the repertory. Example: Pain in temples with coryza, is located in the symptom: „Nose, phenomena, coryza, general pain in, temples, with“, but it is not located in the section of „Head, phenomena, pain“. If the homeopath would search for this combined symptom, he would have to search both in the section „Nose, phenomena, coryza“, as well as in the section „Head, phenomena, pain“. Hoarseness with the pain in the throat is located in the symptom: „Throat, phenomena, pain, hoarseness, with“ and not in the section of „Speech & voice, phenomena, voice“. In this case, the homeopath could choose the symptom „Speech & voice, phenomena, voice, hoarseness“ without knowing that the combined symptom that exactly characterizes the problem exists in the repertory. Solution of the problem Although the computer version of the homeopathic repertory offers many possibilities of intelligent search through symptoms, most homeopathic software treat the repertory as a book version, which is located inside of the computer. They offer no additional functionality in comparison with the book version of the repertory. The homeopaths use the computer version of the repertory exactly as they would use a book version of the repertory. They rely on the fixed repertory structure and browse through the repertory structure exactly as if they would read a book. This method can be usable for the simple repertorization process or in case that the homeopath has an excellent knowledge of the repertory structure. Yet as the computer model of repertory allows for a more sophisticated search algorithms, the structure of the repertory becomes less important. It ceases to be important whether the homeopath has any knowledge of the repertory structure and its internal rules. This enables easier prescription even for beginning homeopaths. Example: The Pain in temples with coryza would have to be (for a homeopath without the knowledge of the repertory structure) unsuccessfully searched within the section „Head, phenomena, pain“ and the homeopath that has an excellent knowledge of the repertory structure would in the end possibly find the symptom in the section „Nose, phenomena, coryza“. By entering a search line „coryza pain temple„ in the Mercurius, the homeopath finds only the correct symptom without the knowledge of the repertory or without the performing a manual search within the structure. With the help of the advanced searching method in the Mercurius, even the homeopath without any knowledge of the repertory structure is able to find the correct symptom. Hoarseness with the pain in the throat would have to searched within „Throat, phenomena, pain, hoarseness, with“ or in the section of „Speech & voice, phenomena, voice“. In this case, the homeopath could choose the symptom „Speech & voice, phenomena, voice, hoarseness“, without knowing that the combined symptom, that exactly characterizes the problem, exists in the repertory. By entering a search line „hoars throat pain„ in the Mercurius, the homeopath finds only the correct symptom. As we can see from the previous examples, the repertory structure without the use of a computer searching model poses certain problems and does not allow an effective searching. Furthermore, the homeopath who works with the repertory structure needs to have a very good knowledge of the structure and has to update his knowledge every time the structure changes. The computer search model removes these problems and enables the homeopath to concentrate on the more important parts of the prescribing process. Conclusion The existence and the good orientation in the repertory structure was very important in the times, when only the book versions of the repertory existed and when there was no possibility of computer based search routines. As the repertory structure has become more and more complex, and together with the changes in the repertory structure of the modern repertories, the perfect orientation in the repertory structure has become more difficult. The main problem in manual searching within the repertory structure is that the huge and very complex structure creates a too big picture that cannot be perceived by a human being in its entirety and complexity. The searching capability allows to instantly find and perceive only the relevant portion of the structure, so that the homeopath can focus on analyzing only the information that is relevant to him. The computer aided search removes also the problems caused by the limitations of the fixed structure (see example) and the homeopath can perceive more easily all the information that is relevant to him without any limitations. The manual search within the ever-growing and constantly changing repertory structure has become more difficult and with the existence of sophisticated search algorithms, such as the ones in the Mercurius homeopathic software has made the manual search through the repertory obsolete. The manual search without the perfect knowledge of a extremely complex data structure of the repertory returns only incomplete information that cannot be used as a basis for an accurate repertorization. |
